How Core Values Shape Real-Life Achievements

I wanted to share a recent experience that reminded me of just how powerful our core values can be. In our last newsletter, we explored the impact of core values on our personal and professional lives. Since then, I had the opportunity to put my own values to the test during an experience that challenged me on every level - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Core Values on the Inca Trail

Last month, I hiked the Inca Trail in Peru with friends, and it wasn’t easy! The 4-day hike was tough, but it gave me the chance to lean into values like perseverance, collaboration, and resilience. On Day 2, we faced one of the most challenging parts of the trail—climbing approximately 4,200 stone steps up to Dead Woman’s Pass at an altitude of over 13,800 feet, followed by a steep descent of nearly 2,000 steps. My legs were burning, and every breath felt harder than the last, but the values of perseverance and resilience kept me moving forward, one step at a time.

Collaboration was essential that day. We relied on each other, offering words of encouragement and even creating a steady rhythm to tackle the endless stairs. We called it the "Inch Worm"—a slow, synchronized back-and-forth cadence that allowed us to keep moving while staying connected as a group. This rhythm became a lifeline, reminding us that we didn’t have to face the challenge alone. We could lean on each other, and together, we made it through.

When the trail got challenging, these values became my mantra, pushing me forward. It was a powerful reminder that core values aren’t just abstract ideas—they’re principles that guide us through life’s toughest and most meaningful moments.

From start to finish on the 4-day Inca Trail! Our adventure began with high spirits and a strong sense of collaboration as we tackled countless stone steps, climbed steep paths, and even shared the trail with llamas. Each day brought its own challenges and rewards, leading to the ultimate reward—reaching Machu Picchu. Perseverance, resilience, and a little 'Inch Worm' teamwork kept us going every step of the way.

Featured Resource: The PEAK Values® Cards

One of my favorite tools for exploring and aligning core values is the PEAK Values® Card Deck. I often use this resource with clients to help them identify, prioritize, and act on the values that matter most to them and their organizations. Prefer digital? No problem. They also offer a PEAK Values® Online Exercise. Below, I’ve shared my top six core values and a few aspirational ones identified in my recent online exercise. Research suggests revisiting your core values every six months to see how they evolve and to keep values-aligned decisions top of mind.

My most recent core values are to the left, identified through the Peak Values® exercise. Harmony, Family, Curiosity, Growth, Collaboration, and Integrity are the values that currently guide me in both personal and professional settings. The exercise also highlighted aspirational values like Wellness, Independence, and Balance, which I aim to further cultivate in my journey.

Practical Application: Reflect & Align with Your Core Values

Create a values list: Write down your current top six core values, along with a few aspirational ones. You can use free values lists referenced in the The Value of Core Values blog as a starting point. Keep this list somewhere visible as a reminder to make values-aligned decisions.
Practice a values check-in: For one week, set aside a few minutes each day to reflect on how you acted in alignment (or misalignment) with your values. This simple practice helps build self-awareness and reinforces intentional action.
Share your values with someone: Talk to a colleague, friend, or family member about your core values and why they matter to you. Sharing can deepen your commitment to these values and foster a sense of purpose and lead to goal attainment.
